Bama Sketches

This is a very quick sketch of the University of Alabama President's Mansion done with pen and ink this afternoon. This is a lovely spot on campus that I enjoyed taking several pictures of on my last trip to Tuscaloosa. There was a truck parked out front between the large urn and the staircase, so I had to use my imagination. This was one of the few buildings on campus that was not burned during the Civil War. Reportedly, Louisa Frances Garland, wife of president Landon C. Garland, made a stand to save the mansion from destruction when Union troops destroyed the campus in April 4, 1865. The mansion has had a number of restorations with the exterior done primarily in white in 1908. It has maintained that look since.

While more than just a sketch, this painting was done from a photograph I took at one of the Bama games last fall. The lovely new plaza where the Walk of Champions takes place made a terrific setting on this particular day when all the trees were showing their beautiful fall colors. The sunlight was so bright it was hard to see at times. This piece will be available for purchase at the Aldridge Gardens "Art in the Gardens" show on June 6th and 7th.
